One Tough Mother

May 13, 2012 - For This Sunday’s theme, “Monday’s Faith”, and it being Mother’s Day, Larry Reimer is preaching on “One Tough Mother – A Non-Sentimental Look at Mothers and Mother Figures”. Larry is exploring a rather unlikely biblical figure as a mother figure, and he’s trying something new in his sermon. He’s excited about this sermon, but he’s unwilling to say anything more than this about it.

At UCG we are always aware of specific celebrations like Mother’s Day, and we are always inclusive and conscious of the variety of family situations, conditions, and situations each of us brings to worship. Accepting that we are accepting as we are is our definition of grace, and this is a Sunday of grace.

My sermon as part of the theme “To an Unknown God” looks at the place of the dark night of the soul, the parts of life that cause me to awake at 3:00 a.m. and wonder if I truly do know God. What threatens my faith? How do I work through my own dark nights? This is Sunday’s sermon.” The choir is also singing a great spiritual, “Swing Down Chariot”.

Our Advent worship theme is “Keep Awake.” Sandy Reimer’s sermon, “My Song in the Night,” echoes the anthem sung by our adult choir, and we experience a sense of Advent, as Frederick Buechner writes, “as somewhere between the darkness and the light, somewhere between the fact of darkness and the hope of light, watching and waiting for a holiness to heal us.”
