The Community Weatherization Coalition (CWC) is a local non-profit that UCG members helped to found. Several UCG members serve as active volunteers. Since 2008, the CWC has helped over 2,000 Alachua County households save hundreds of thousands of dollars in utility bills, by saving energy and water in their homes by providing free home energy tune-ups. During CWC's three-part Energy Coach training, you'll learn how you can save local households money on their utility bills with simple retrofits, such as installing more efficient light bulbs, shower heads, pipe insulation, and sharing educational tips for further savings. Sign up today to join other UCG members in helping save energy, water, and money for our neighbors!

10:00 am – 1:00 pm SG - Paper Flowers from the Kitchen* Turn cupcake liners and coffee filters into stunning flowers! This is an easy art project where you’re guaranteed to create something you’ll love. We'll dye coffee filters, cut them into petals, and attach them to wire stems using hot glue. To save time, pre-dyed filters will be available so you can start creating right away!
What to Bring:
A hot glue gun (if you have one; we’ll share if you don’t).
Scissors you’re comfortable using.
An apron to protect your clothes during the dyeing process.
If you decide to dye some filters, bring some old plastic bags to carry home your damp creations…just in case they take a bit of time to dry.
Let’s get creative and make something beautiful together!

SG - The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County (offsite)
10:00 am – 12:00 pm SG - The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County (offsite) Before schools were integrated, Black teachers taught from two books; the official government sanctioned books and from other texts, written by Black authors about the realities of the Black experience. It was referred to as “the Other Book.” In the current political climate of book banning and “white washing,” this lecture series offers an experience of the history of Alachua County from the Other Book. The intention is to raise the awareness that what we have been taught is not the whole story, and sometimes one must dig deeper and go to the original source material to learn the truth of our shared past. Our hope is that when participants leave this experience, as they travel around the county they will look at familiar places with new eyes and new awareness, and that this new understanding will help us to created a better shared future.

SG - Mindful Mending*
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm SG - Mindful Mending* A favorite sweater that has moth holes. A much-loved but stained garment. In this small group we will take control and find much joy and accomplishment in mending garments and breathing new life into them.
A mended garment can be like a wearable work of art. We will make samples of several fabric techniques such as embroidery, sashiko stitching, as well as different visible mending methods in the first hour. The second hour is dedicated to applying these methods to our own mending projects. In this age of disposable everything and hyper consumerism, slowing down and mending is an act of resistance. Bring projects to crowdsource the mending approach with the group and you will soon catch the mending bug.
It is not required for the class, but Malika recommends “Mending Life: A handbook for Repairing Clothes and Hearts,” by Nina and Sonya Montenegro for inspiration.

“Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.” ― Robin Wall Kimmerer
We will come together to celebrate Earth Day 2025 with an evening of reflection on our relationship with our precious planet. Please bring photos, prose, poetry, mementos et cetera and share with us the place(s) and experiences where you know the earth loves you back. If you bring writings, you are invited to bring copies to share, if you like. This is likely to be a sacred time of sharing in which deep listening will be in order.

In this two-session small group we will:
—Explore myths and realities about fitness and aging
—Learn and practice movements that can be adapted to almost any fitness level
—Relate fitness to functional activities: standing up and sitting down, getting up from the floor, lifting and carrying objects, and fall prevention
—Develop your own personal plan for maximizing your strength and balance
The activity is ideal for adults over age 65, although younger adults including caregivers are welcome if space permits. Due to the nature of the group this is an in-person only activity.Come ready to move!
Jeremy Archer has training and experience both in teaching functional movement and working with older athletes. Please contact him in advance if you have any questions about the small group.
