The UCG Sunday Seminar Committee hosts an inspiring collection of Sunday Seminars: They will be in person at 10:15am in Reimer Hall or join us for a live stream on our YouTube channel. Here are November’s offerings.
November 7 – Eat Local, Grow Hope Global – Join members of the Compassion in Action committee as we learn more about two UCG projects that support food security. Meet several of the 16 local farmers market vendors who partner with UCG. And learn about Growing Hope Globally, which teaches women to grow vegetables in greenhouses in the highlands of Guatemala. Seminar is the perfect preparation for our annual Break-Fast, on Wednesday, November 10.
November 14 – No seminar; Church on the Prairie
November 21 – All-Church Read for Fall 2021, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent by Pulitzer Prize winner, Isabel Wilkerson – “Caste” is a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America and explains how our country’s history and lives have been shaped by a hidden caste system. “As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, a flashlight cast down the aisle, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feeling or morality It is about power–which groups have it and which do not.” RJC members Barbara Gibbs and Doris Harvey will examine the premise of the book. You will consider questions to deepen your understanding of how caste and race are not the same, but deeply embedded in our current racial, political, and social problems.
November 28 – Stories Matter, Especially Yours – In this seminar we will consider how our stories help shape our lives and may shape the lives of others. We will utilize stories around Advent and Christmas as models for deeper understanding. UCG member Daniel Webster will tell some stories to help us move to a deeper understanding of what these kinds of stories can do. You are invited to think of your own stories around this season that shape who you are.
