Welcome to Worship

January 16, 2022
Poets & Prophets

Join us here for a live-stream beginning at 9:15am

“Gentle me, Holy One into an unclenched moment, a deep breath, a letting go of heavy experiences, of shriveling anxieties, of dead certainties, that, softened by the silence, surrounded by the light, and open to the mystery, I may be found by wholeness, upheld by the unfathomable, entranced by the simple, and filled with the joy that is you.”  – Ted Loder

WELCOME- Rev. Andy Bachmann

PRELUDE-offered by Phillip Herr-Klepacki

INVOCATION- A Liturgy of the Morning, from the Corrymeela Community, led by Lisa Langford, Board Chair of our Open and Affirming Committee.

Leader: On the first morning…the first morning.

People: And God said that it was Good.
(With every successive morning, the People respond, “And God said that it was Good.”)

OPENING SONG- “They’ll Know Were God’s People by Our Love”

Leaders will sing the verses, please respond by singing the chorus.

Leaders: We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord. We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord.  And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.

All: And they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love, by our love, Yes they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love.

Leaders: We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand… And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land.

All: And they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love, by our love, Yes they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love.

Leaders: We will work with each other; we will work side by side… And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride.

All: And they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love, by our love, Yes they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love.

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN- “I’m Third.” Rev. Bachmann

BIRTHDAYS

INTERLUDE

SCRIPTURE- Matthew: 22:36-40

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

1 Corinthians 12:1-13:6

SERMON – “Living in the Name of Love”- Andy Bachmann

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – Rev. Talia Raymond

Prayer response: “The Gift of Love”
Upper voices echo third verse, ()= echo proceeding phrase

Though I may speak with bravest fire,
And have the gift to all inspire,
And have not love, my words are vain,
As sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess,
And striving so my love profess,
But not be giv’n by love within,
The profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come () our hearts control (),
Or spirits long () to be made whole ().
Let inward love () guide every deed ();
By this we worship () and are freed ().

Announcements

Epiphany Stars – Stars with YOUR special guiding word for 2022 are in baskets in the sanctuary foyer. When you attend worship and enter the foyer, find the basket, close your eyes, let a star pick you, and share its wisdom with you throughout the coming year!  If you are joining us online, click here to generate a word, or you can call the office to have one sent to you.

United Tribes – The Tribes will meet outside and masked on our K-5 playground for our lesson and games this Sunday.

Sunday Seminar – “Martin Luther King’s World House in a Changing Climate,” in Reimer Hall and live streamed on YouTube.  Martin Luther King Jr. had a vision about a World House. Stanford University’s King Institute developed a curriculum to plan building King’s World House. Join in a discussion to identify actions we can take to move Gainesville towards a more diverse, inclusive, and loving World House. For example, we could help organize a day of activities with other faith communities and play soccer, picnic, or sing songs of peace. Helen Warren, from the Racial Justice Committee, will facilitate the discussion.

The Church office will be closed this Monday, January 17, 2022, in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Racial Justice Committee will be selling all sizes of BLM t-shirts the in the courtyard between services. Martin Luther King Day is Monday, January 17, 2022. Help us make UCG a big presence on Monday, January 17, at the march that day. Cost of shirts is $10.00.

The Racial Justice Committee invites you to participate in any of these events in honor or Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There will be a group of UCGers marching in the parade on Monday, January 17, starting at noon at Bo Diddley Plaza and concluding at Citizens Field. Join us!

KAIROS requests your help – John Jopling needs additional assistance getting to and from physical therapy. Click here to help.

A little short on your 2021 pledge donations?  It’s not too late to fulfill your commitment!  Donations are always welcome via check, cash, or credit card (click here). If you love your church bookkeeper, please note the YEAR on your donation. NOTE: If you wish your donation to be booked to the 2021 fiscal year (for tax purposes), I will accept cash or checks dated 12/31/2021 or prior.

Small Group Submissions – Please consider offering a group through UCG. It can be just about anything! From nature hikes to car tutorials, to Bible studies to volunteer work opportunities. Help us stay connected through a small group opportunity! Submit Small Group ideas at bit.ly/spring22SG. The deadline for submissions is January 30.

Rachel Kirk, a daughter of our church, will be ordained into ministry in the United Church of Christ in our Sanctuary at 2 pm on January 23rd. This is a big day for Rachel and her family, and a big day for us as a church! Whether you know Rachel or not, please join us for her service. You can learn more about Rachel at our Sunday Seminar on the 23rd, when she will tell us about her path to ministry and what her time at UCG has done to inspire her way. Please join us for this important and festive day in the life of our church.

Sunday Drive-Up Assistance Now Available – Volunteers are available to assist disabled persons from the apron in front of the UCG courtyard into the Sanctuary.  Please call or text Dar Mikula (352-359-4041) directly ahead of time to make arrangements and we’ll meet you out front.

Please help keep our church finances healthy while you stay healthy!  Please consider donating online when we cannot be together in person.  To GIVE,  click here  to make a one-time donation to UCG -or- to set up a recurring donation schedule via your bank account or credit card.  Here  is a video on how to use Shelby Giving.
