Board of Business May 2022

I came across it the other day, the photo of a pug-nosed dog lying on its tummy, obviously exhausted. The caption: “I can’t Adult today! Please don’t make me Adult!” My guess is I’m not the only one with whom this meme resonates, at least some of the time. We fantasize about some easier time, when life just went along . . . Except that’s not what it means to be grownup. There’s STUFF, and sometimes, as adults, we just have to deal with it.

As with our personal lives, so too with the communities we care about. So too with UCG, our buildings, our grounds. STUFF – roofs, bathrooms, retention ponds, etc., need attention. And sometimes, in the normal whirl of UCG’s busyness, this STUFF can slip to the background. And, as with our personal life’s, STUFF that isn’t dealt with can pile up until it clamors for our attention.

Which is why right now we’re assessing the whole works – buildings, grounds, deferred and current maintenance needs and repairs – to get a sense of the big picture. Everything, urgent, important, nice-to-do, irritating – and once we know what’s out there, we can work as a community to get serious about what needs (and what would simply be nice) to get done. And, of course, how it will get paid for.

Stay tuned, friends. We can do this, as a community. It’s time for us to Adult today.

PS – As I finish my term in May, the Board of Business is fortunate to welcome incoming chair Dick Elkins. Many thanks to Dick for stepping up yet again to leadership in UCG.  ~Maureen Killoran
