Our exhibit this month, “King Mango & Friends,” features the work of UCG member Glenn Terry. Much of the art displayed centers around posters and masks he created for Coconut Grove’s King Mango Strut parade. It is a popular South Florida event he created forty years ago. ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My art career started when I got in trouble for drawing on walls as a three- year-old. Creating things with crayons, paint, and paper has been a joy ever since. I spent much of my adult life in art education. The work I exhibit in the show reflect the whimsical projects I did with my young art students.

BIOGRAPHY

I got my start in Miami where my family lived just north of the airport. At 18 I headed for Gainesville where I became a Double Gator. I then returned south to make art, sail, and practice law in Coconut Grove.

In Miami I am best known for creating a silly parade, the King Mango Strut. This holiday tradition has made people laugh since 1982.

Lawyering wasn’t fun for me so I became an art educator in my mid-forties.  I continued with this until I retired five years ago. My wife, Francesca, and i have four lovely children.  We got smart and re-located to Gainesville in 2019 where we live happily ever after and I continue my creative endeavors.
