One: Come, you who are tired, you who are hungry.
All: Come and find rest for your soul and a feast of blessing.
One: Come, you who long for freedom and a reason to celebrate.
All: Come into community: where the seeds of justice are planted,
stories of joy are told, and love abounds.
One: Come, friends, into this place, into this holy moment: we are all welcome
here. Amen.

– Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”
MOMENT FOR MINISTRY- Celebrating Juneteenth and Committing to Racial Justice – Jenna White and Jessica Elkins
SUNG RESPONSE AND OFFERING – “The Rose”
Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves the heart to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
an endless aching need;
I say love, it is a flower;
and you, its only seed.
It’s the heart, afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It’s the dream, afraid of waking
that never takes the chance.
It’s the one who won’t be taken
who cannot seem to give;
And the soul, afraid of dying
that never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember, in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love,
in the spring, becomes the Rose.
READING– Deuteronomy 15:7-8 – Rev. Bromleigh McCleneghan
If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted towards your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be.
READING – from a letter to President Biden shared by the Children’s Defense Fund. Offered by Rev. Bromleigh McCleneghan
“More than 38 million Americans, including 11.7 million children live in households that struggle to put food on the table. Food insecurity negatively impacts health, educational access, workforce readiness and business productivity. In addition, the COVID pandemic has affected food security in all corners of America, while also widening the disparities in food insecurity among individuals who are Black, Indigenous, Latino and other people of color. Food insecurity in America is a political choice and there is an opportunity to take transformative action.” It’s time to seize the moment again, including putting permanent universal school meals on the 2022 agenda. Research confirms access to universal school meals boosts attendance, improves academic and health outcomes, and reduces behavior-related suspensions. Nearly 60 percent of children just above the cutoff for free meals are children of color, leaving them most at risk of losing out on the healthy food they need to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. Decades after that visit to hungry Black children in Mississippi, institutional racism still disproportionately denies children of color—and their families—access to healthy food at home and in their communities. Universal school meals and other tools to fight hunger are an essential step for advancing racial equity right now.”

READING OF THE COMPACT
“We join as a spiritual community in this compact:
To worship God, however known,
To welcome into our church those of differing
understanding and theological opinion,
To learn from our religious heritage, yet to
grow by seeking new dimensions of truth.
To follow, even imperfectly, the way of Jesus
in personal involvement with each other,
And, strengthened by this bond, to act in
Christian concern for the welfare of all people.”

June 17 COVID Update
UCG continues to fall in our Orange zone of danger. The number of new cases of Covid continues to rise slowly in Alachua County to 340.8 per hundred thousand (was 326). The surrounding counties are now also in the Orange zone. Most cases have been mild but elders and those with altered immunity should be particularly careful. Hospitalizations for Covid occupy 4.4% of available beds in the county. Masking is required in our Sanctuary and we strongly recommend it in our indoor gathering places.

UCG is following Endemic Response Guidelines which are based on the risk for serious disease and not the risk for transmission. We are currently in the orange zone and masking will be required in the Sanctuary. There is a section of the Sanctuary with fewer chairs if you need more space for social distancing. Please note that UCG will continue broadcasting one Sunday worship service on YouTube.
