An incredible group of 27 youths and 10 adults traveled to Guyan Valley in Wyoming County, West Virginia. We worked with The Appalachia Service Project, which has been in relationship with the people of Appalachia in 5 states since 1969. Their guiding principle is to make homes warmer, safer, and drier for families. They also have a saying we admire: “Relationship ministry, with construction on the side.” Our large group was split into five separate teams (named after famous local snow cone flavors) which were able to meet and serve five different families in Guyan Valley. The teams spent the week roofing, doing demo work, getting a home ready for insulation and siding, replacing floors in kitchens and bathrooms (and the toilet, too), securing stairs and porches, and adding insulation, drywall, texture and paint to the ceiling and walls to make a new, safe room for a child. We also made memorable connections with the homeowners, their families, and in the communities we served. We were greeted by the newly elected mayor of Iaeger for a rousing “culture night” with music both from incredible singers and the passing train filling the air. These trips are deeply meaningful and shape the lives of both our adults and teens. We are so thankful for all of your support, these trips would not be possible without your assistance with our fundraising efforts and your mindfulness and prayers as we set off on our adventures. We always strive to represent UCG with love and honor. Please enjoy our slideshow at this link to travel the week with us!
