This Sunday, we’ll have new members and special music and an invitation to reflection from our new congregational life group. We’ll have the briefest of sermons (to make space for all the other good things), and we will be reminded of the call to “Hold fast.”
It will be good to be together, in person or online. Join us.

CALL TO WORSHIP

ONE: Friends, so many in our nation are hurting.

ALL: We are grieving a future that now seems lost to us.

ONE: We are weary, unsure if we have it in us to make the journey of heart and spirit that lies ahead.

ALL: We are tempted to stay in bed. To close our eyes.

ONE: But we are also moved by the love of our neighbors, by the needs of our communities, by the cries of our people, our children.

ALL: So guide us on the road ahead, we pray.

ONE: Sustain us as we seek the holy, the just, the loving, the true.

ALL: Help us to remember you, to return to you and to your vision of the flourishing of all creation.

ONE: Guide us with prayer. Guide us with love. Guide us with courage.

All: Amen.

OPENING SONG – They’ll Know We’re God’s People by Our Loveverses 1-2

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord.
We are one in the Spirit we are one in the Lord.
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.

Chorus:
And they’ll know we’re God’s people By our love, by our love,
Yes, they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand.
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand. And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land. Chorus

WELCOME OF NEW MEMBERS – Lindsey Telg, United Church of Gainesville Moderator

READING OF THE COMPACT

“We join as a spiritual community in this compact:
To worship God, however known,
To welcome into our church those of differing
understanding and theological opinion,
To learn from our religious heritage, yet to
grow by seeking new dimensions of truth.
To follow, even imperfectly, the way of Jesus
in personal involvement with each other,
And, strengthened by this bond, to act in
Christian concern for the welfare of all people.”

PRAYER FOR NEW MEMBERS AND A SHARED BLESSING
INTERLUDE – “They’ll Know We’re God’s People by Our Love” verses 3-4

Chorus:
And they’ll know we’re God’s people
By our love, by our love,
Yes, they’ll know we’re God’s people by our love.

We will work with each other, we will work side by side.
We will work with each other, we will work side by side.
And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride.
Chorus

All praise the Creator, from whom all things come,
And all praise to Christ Jesus, who guides us on,
And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one.
Chorus

AN INVITATION – offered by Ezra Stone

Ezra Stone will share briefly about the work of the Congregational Life Team and invite reflection on how we live out our church compact.

MEDITATIVE MUSIC – offered by Phillip Herr-Klepacki, Director of Music Ministry

SCRIPTURE – 1 Thessalonians 5:14-25
We urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.

May the God of peace sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and that God will do this.

SPECIAL MUSIC AND OFFERING – “Make Them Hear You”
by Stephen Flaherty, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens – offered by Rev. Talia Raymond, vocals, and Phillip Herr-Klepacki, piano

SERMON – “Hold Fast” – Rev. Bromleigh McCleneghan

CLOSING HYMN – “Hammer Song
If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning I’d hammer in the evening, all over this land.
I’d hammer out danger, I’d hammer out warning, I’d hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land.
If I had a bell, I’d ring it in the morning,
I’d ring it in the evening, all over this land.
I’d ring out danger, I’d ring out warning,
I’d ring out love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land.
If I had a song, I’d sing it in the morning,
I’d sing it in the evening, all over this land.
I’d sing out danger, I’d sing out warning,
I’d sing out love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land.
Well, I got a hammer and I got a bell,
And I got a song to sing all over this land.
It’s the hammer of justice, It’s the bell of freedom, It’s the song about love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land.
Words and music by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger

Soul Food Enlistment Update: As of Thursday, November 7, we have received 146 pledges totaling $522,079, more than halfway to our goal of $850,000. Thanks to everyone who has pledged! We are over $40,000 behind where we were at this point in last year’s campaign, but we are closing the gap. It is critical that all UCG families / pledging units submit a pledge card so that Board of Business can plan for next year’s budget. Even if your pantry is bare this year and you are able to pledge zero dollars at this time, we would like you to submit a pledge card by Thanksgiving so we know where we stand for next year. To pledge, you can visit the web portal at https://bit.ly/UCGpledge2025, turn in a physical pledge card, or email Catherine Cake at catherinec@ucgainesville.org.United Church of Gainesville Blood Drive is today – Please give the gift of life. The Bloodmobile will be at the east parking lot from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
