The Other Book Event Series 2025

Racial Justice Committee are looking forward to collaborating with the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project (ACCRP) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People( NAACP) on a series of lectures about black history in Alachua County, The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County.

Our members, Jackie Davis and Ron Nutter, have been working with Dr. Rik Stevenson, UF Professor of African American Studies, to complete this excellent series of lectures in various locations. The information about this series is here and below. We are encouraging UCG members to attend and support this unique opportunity within our community! We believe that we still have more to understand about our racial history. Deeper insight will strengthen us all.

What: Lecture Series about Black History in Alachua County 

Where: Each lecture will be held in a different location to contribute to experiential learning. 

When: The second Saturday morning of each month from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Dates and topics listed below.

Who: Co-sponsored by the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project, The Alachua Chapter of the NAACP, and the Racial Justice Committee of United Church   of Gainesville. Supported by the Community Foundation of North Central Florida, The Harn Museum, Haile Homestead, and the Cotton Club.

The Jim Crow Era in Alachua County, with Dr. Michelle Dunlap and Dr. Rik Stevenson 

April 12, 2025, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.  

Location: The Cotton Club (837 SE 7th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32601)

Civil Rights to the Present, with Dr. Rik Stevenson and local elected officials from the  

County Commission, the City Commission, and the School Board
