Buildings and Grounds – April 2024

This is my last time to give an update about Buildings and Grounds. After 18 months as acting chair, I am passing the leadership baton to Erick Smith and Stephen Bottomly, who are more than equipped to lead this experienced and knowledgeable group of folks. I will stay on the committee for the time being to be of what help I can.

We have happily welcomed the return of Wendy Simonson to our group. Wendy brings a wealth of commercial and residential building construction experience and is now retired, so she has more time and energy to devote to our work.

Our group is largely focusing on setting our priorities once we have funds to take on any projects. We will first do a deeper investigation as to the cause of the settling in the southeast corner of Reimer Hall. And then retention ponds will likely be our  next priority. Phoebe Papadi has laid out a tentative plan for storage and once we have funds available for shelving, we can begin moving items around. Seminar A will be the starting point. We will keep you posted as plans solidify.

The security issues seem to have been addressed for now with the re-keying of all locks and a key issuing and tracking system and 12 operating security cameras mounted and providing detailed information about comings and goings. When more funding is available, a new alarm system will be considered along with a key card system that will provide the optimal form of security. Lisa reported that the individual responsible for most of those break-ins has been arrested and the church has requested that he participate in a drug rehab program as part of the terms for his release. I know we are all thankful for this congregation’s restorative justice approach.

Carol Barron and I met with Sergio Reyes from EDA Engineering, to determine answers to questions concerning the reestablishment of the retention ponds on our property, as well as his recommendations for courtyard drainage issues. Given the differing opinions among our committee, Sergio will come to a meeting to address the concerns.

By the time you read this, Erick Smith will have conducted a volunteer work day to clear vegetation north and east of the Sanctuary. It is a veritable jungle! With any luck we will have pictures to post!!

We are moving ahead with wisdom and discernment! –Liz Harvey
