Eat Local, Grow Hope Globally
Impact Food Scarcity and Justice
Join other UCGers to help ensure food security for our community by shopping at area farmers markets. Markets are open on weekday afternoons at Grove Street Market on Mondays and GNV Market at Heartwood on Thursdays, plus there are two markets on Saturday mornings: the Alachua County Farmers Market and Haile Farmers Market. Throughout October look for the Eat Local Grow Hope Global signs on the booths at the markets and thank our partners.
Why shop local?
- support for local farms supports their business so that we have a reliable supply of food no matter the supply chain issues
- fresh food is healthier and stays fresh longer
- local food requires less transportation which reduces fossil fuels’ impact on the climate
- a dozen vendors are UCG partners in a Grow Hope Globally food security project in Guatemala
Three years ago Compassion in Action began this two-pronged project:
- Eat Local which partners with local farmers and vendors to insure our own food security, and
- Grow Hope Global in which our donations together with donations from our Eat Local partners support farmers in the Western Highlands of Guatemala to improve their food security.
Since 2019 our UCG project has grown from 4 local farmers market partners to over a dozen. We are grateful for this growing success. Spread the word about the fun of exploring our local farmers markets. To learn more about the Guatemala Nebaj Quetzaltenango greenhouse project and the role of Growing Hope Globally, click here.
We will celebrate on Wednesday, November 10, with a break-fast event in a fashion however known in these COVID days. Details will be announced later about the event and donation opportunities to the Guatemalan greenhouse program. Eat Local, Grow Hope Global is a Compassion in Action project.
