Eat Local, Grow Hope Global: Impact Food Scarcity and Justice
Join other UCGers to help ensure food security for our community by shopping at area farmers markets. Supportive markets are open at Grove Street Market on Mondays and GNV Market on Thursdays, plus Saturday mornings at Haile Farmers Market. Look for the Eat Local Grow Hope Global signs.
Why shop local?
- supports local farmers’ businesses to ensure we have a reliable supply of food no matter the supply chain issues
- fresh food is healthier and stays fresh longer
- local food requires less transportation and reduces fossil fuel impact on the clima a dozen vendors are UCG’s partners in a Grow Hope Globally food security project in Guatemala
Five years ago UCG’s Compassion in Action committee began this two-pronged project:
- Eat Local which partners with local farmers and vendors to insure our own food security, and
- Grow Hope Global in which our donations support farmers in Guatemala to improve their food security.
Since 2019 our UCG project has grown from 4 local farmers market partners to over a dozen. We are grateful for this growing success. Spread the word about the fun of exploring our local farmers markets. To learn more about Guatemala projects and the role of Growing Hope Globally, click here and sort by country for Guatemala.
We will celebrate on Thursday, May 4, with a Break-Fast event. Details will be announced later about the event and donation opportunities to the Guatemalan greenhouse program.

WOW!! We had a fantastic collection of useful and loving items for our annual Gift Bags for the Homeless project. With the enthusiastic help of UCG youth, Compassion in Action volunteers filled 7 large boxes with colorful gift bags that were delivered to GRACE Marketplace and St. Francis House. THANK YOU for your generous donations!
