As I write this note to you all, my beloved church family, we are in the midst of our Advent and Christmas preparations and celebrations here at UCG. The greens have been hung, carols are ringing through the rafters, and tidings of hope, peace, joy, and love are proclaimed with sincerity. At the same time, we are preparing to say farewell to Rev. Bromleigh, a visionary minister who has shared her deep gifts with us. The tension of the Advent spirit, waiting and wondering, is among us. As we move into a new year of transition and healing together, here are the Advent prayers that I am pondering in my own heart as I light Advent flames anew:
Hope: In a world where history is being made, but not comprehensively taught, may our church’s history of justice, inclusion, and wisdom bring hope that a future of equity and compassion is yet possible.
Peace: In a world of uncertainty, violence, and fear, may we be a place of safety, comfort, and care.
Joy: In a world that seeks to divide, may the joy we have found through the bonds of shared community give us energy and purpose for the unifying work ahead.
Love: In all things, through all things, and above all things, may undiminished divine love be reflected in us.
May we continue the UCG journey together, by another road, lit by the guiding star of grace; and may you know deeply and truly, that we will make the way by walking – side by side. Amen.
