Climate Summit on September 30

The Alachua Branch NAACP in partnership with the Creation Care and Climate Justice Committee (and with the support of the UCG Justice League) will be holding a climate summit September 30, 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at UCG. The summit will focus on local impacts of climate change and how our community can address them.

  • The confirmed keynote speaker is Jacqueline Patterson, director of the Chisholm Legacy Foundation and a nationally known leader in climate justice. (thechisholmlegacyproject.org)
  • There will be a presentation of the recent Alachua County vulnerability analysis from Stephen Hofstetter, the county’s Environmental Protection Department director, and John Nix, chair of the Citizens Climate Advisory Committee.
  • Following these speakers, we will have four panel discussions on the local climate challenges and solutions related to water, food, energy, and health.

Panels will be moderated by local elected officials: Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward, Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe, Hawthorne Mayor Jacqueline Randall, and Micanopy Mayor Jiana Williams.

One of the invited panelists mentioned that she was grateful to UCG for hosting the Racial Disparity Summit several years ago. She believes this summit could have a similar impact in changing attitudes and policies.
