Here are three items of interest. We are working with the Sierra Club of Florida to address shutoffs of utilities (power and water) during heat waves and especially for the poor. We met on May 21 with GRU’s Government Affairs and Community Relations Director. Our interest in this issue was sparked by a local problem raised during the March 27 event at UCG, the National Faith and Climate Forum. The Sierra Club has been involved with this issue for some time, and a state initiative has been proposed in Tallahassee. Stay tuned for future updates.
A new film, Ocean with David Attenborough, has premiered in Europe and will begin streaming in the U.S. on World Ocean Day, June 8 (on National Geographic Channel, Disney+ and Hulu). Teachers or learning centers can request to show it for free by visiting this website. The highly trusted Sir Attenborough, who turned 99 this year, calls it his most important work. The film highlights oceanic beauty alongside destructive practices such as industrial trawling. A discussion guide from National Geographic is forthcoming and may be useful for groups at UCG.
On a less hopeful note, the town of Cedar Key was named one of the country’s most endangered places by The National Trust for Historic Preservation, due to enduring 3 hurricanes in 13 months. Read more here from the website of The Invading Sea.
