On October 4, a contract was signed with The Flanagan Companies as general contractor for a project to renovate the UCG education wing. The contract is for $89,990. Work to be included is replacement of all interior lights with LED fixtures, new light switches, new electrical outlets, new interior doors and casings, new cabinetry in room 9 and new flooring. The entire interior also will be painted along with the new baseboards installed with the flooring. Some outdoor lighting also will be changed and there will be a new gate leading to the north playground. A support post is likely be reinstalled at the point where rooms 3, 4, 5 and 6 come together. The accordion doors will be removed.
The flooring, cabinets, laminate for countertops, paint colors and door hardware all have been chosen.
A 10% payment was provided on signing. Work has progressed according to the original plan of a 4 to 6 week project. All interior doors have been removed and the cabinetry to be replaced has been removed. Closet interiors have been removed. Baseboards have been removed and the new flooring will be installed over the existing flooring, with the exception of the glued down rug in room 5, which will be ripped out and the floor leveled. The new interior doors have been delivered are expected to be in place by October 22. These new doors will be smooth and painted, so they will be easier to keep clean. Surface preparation for repainting the exterior doors is underway. So far, the rust on the doors all appears to be surface and not affecting door integrity.
A minor plumbing leak was found in a closet in room 4 (opposite the bathrooms) and repaired out of maintenance funds. Flanagan replaced the rotted drywall around the leak without charge.
With the completion of the demolition work, the next payment, for $22,497.50 is now being processed. Electrical work is underway, with preparation for the new light fixtures taking place this week, which will have the ceilings ready for painting.
