I know, I know, it’s just Thanksgiving, and I’m already celebrating the ball drop. But actually, in the historical church calendar, this week marks the end of one year and the beginning of another. Sunday, November 29th is the start of Advent, the first season in the church year. (So get those little calendars full of chocolate ready!)
In a month or so we’ll be inundated with lists of the best and worst of 2015. We’ll be reflecting on growing waistlines or job dissatisfaction and resolving that next year will be different. But this week, a month before the hubbub in Times Square, we have an opportunity to reflect on our lives from a spiritual perspective, to pause and ask, “How is it with my soul?”
As you think back on the past year or the past several years, what is it that has most helped you grow spiritually? When have you felt most connected to the Holy? When have you felt most disconnected?
On our recent All-Church Survey, the number one priority lifted up by our congregation was spiritual growth and nurture. That’s exciting for me as a minister, and challenging. In my experience, spiritual growth isn’t as predictable or linear as physical fitness flowing from regular exercise. So instead of setting resolutions, I believe in creating spaces. How can I put myself in a space where spiritual growth is possible?
As you think about the coming year in your spiritual journey, how can you cultivate a space for spiritual growth, a space to deepen connection with God, however known? How can UCG help? (Let me know!) How could you help to create that space for others with a similar need?
My New Year’s prayer is that together we will create such spaces, not only for our own growth, but for the growth and healing of our community and our world. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Blessed New Year!
