July 28 COVID Update

The COVID-19 virus is still detectable in nearly all of the wastewater samples from Alachua County. The numbers of new cases and hospitalizations, although both low, have been slowly rising over the past 2 months. Waning immunity and the continued emergence of new omi-cron sub-variants are likely contributing factors. The use of Paxlovid in the early treatment of high risk cases and recent vaccination with a bivalent vaccine have both helped stabilize the death rate at a very low level.

The new omicron sub-variants produce the now familiar cold or flu symptoms in adults but can present as pink eye with fever in children. Masks are still not required in the sanctuary but people at risk for serious illness from COVID and people over age 65 who have not received a bivalent booster in the past 6 months should consider wearing N-95 or KN-95 masks (available in the foyer) indoors in public venues.
