When I got the call from Rebecca a year ago to become Moderator-Elect and subsequently Moderator, I said yes right away. I think she was taken aback because most people would have asked more questions like “What are the Moderator’s duties?”, “What’s the time commitment?” or even “Can I have a few days to think about it”? But not me–I was honored that she asked. I felt like it was my time to give back to UCG which has been such an important part of my life for the last 32 years.
Working with Donn Smith-Lopez this past year has been an outstanding learning experience. His leadership skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities has been an inspiration. He has guided us through the residual PPP funding approval process for the renovation of the education wing. He also led us through the process of looking at additional revenue sources such as the use of our parking lot by Publix and the consideration of a charter school for our education wing.
It has been another challenging pandemic year, but our UCG community has been flexible and resilient throughout. We continue to offer virtual worship services for those who aren’t able or ready to return in person. Our Christmas worship and celebrations were wonderful including Advent, Lessons and Carols and the Christmas Eve services. The all-church retreat was a great success! The season of Lent had several opportunities for reflection and worship. Our Easter services were well-attended and celebratory.
Our outreach projects such as Food4Kids, Growing Hope Globally and the collection of household items for the Gainesville Area AIDS Project are active and strong. The children and youth groups are thriving—20 teens were confirmed in May. The Vinery program is an important ministry that will facilitate interaction with UF and Santa Fe students and faculty. I’ve been continually amazed by the support and hard work that goes on behind the scenes at UCG with so many dedicated volunteers and hardworking staff and clergy.
With our world in turmoil, I believe the work of UCG is more important than ever. Besides the church providing spiritual guidance and strength, our social outreach programs make a difference in our community and world. Together we can continue to accomplish so much more. I am optimistic and excited for the future of UCG and am looking forward to working with Moderator-Elect Jeremy Archer in the coming year.
The theme for my Moderator year is Into the Light: Together Again.
