Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission of Florida and the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project are working together to present an online panel discussion of the film Just Mercy on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 4 PM.
The event will be moderated by Assistant County Manager Carl Smart, and panelists will include Sheriff-elect Clovis Watson, Public Defender Stacy Scott, and community organizer Chanae Jackson. Just Mercy is a 2019 biographical legal drama based on the book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. The film tells the true story of Mr. Stevenson’s early career as a defense attorney in Alabama and the founding of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). The EJI is a private nonprofit organization “that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons.” Attendees should plan to watch the film prior to the discussion. It is available for streaming (with subscription) on HBO Max and Hulu, as well as in disc rental via Redbox. The event will be live-streamed at www.bit.ly/UCG20YouTube.
