A three month group to read three books of significance to the Black experience in the US. These books were chosen for a variety of genres, different time in US history, and exploration of the works of famous black women. All are shorter books and available at a reasonable price. 

APRIL: Historical narrative – early 1800s Narrative of Sojourner Truth by Sojourner Truth (Dover Thrift Edition) Born in 1797 into bondage, she later became a powerful figure in progressive movement. She was orator, prophet, social reformer, counselor of slaves, and sponsor of a black migration to the Western United States. 

MAY: Fiction by well-known author of 20th century & Nobel Prize Winner Home by Toni Morrison The story of Frank who joined the US Army to escape his too small world. After the war, he experiences life in a 1950s America mined with lethal pitfalls for an unwary black man. 

JUNE: Autobiographical, Essays by famous author, poet, activist Even the Stars Look Lonesome by Maya Angelo The author talks of things she cares about most. Topics include: Danger in Denial, The Rage against Violence, Africa, Loving and Learning.
