With the support of the UCG Racial Justice Committee, The Other Book, had an attendance of 94 people! We are delighted to offer this opportunity to learn the black history of our county. We hope to see even more attendees at the second session on Saturday, February 8 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Haile Plantation, (located 8500 SW Archer Road, Gainesville, 32608.) Come listen and learn, then take time to visit this 6200 Square foot home, built by enslaved people, with its “talking walls.”
So far, Nkwanda Jah of the Cultural Arts Coalition has been able to supply a classroom in Oh, Ghana with desks for each child and is now able to provide 6 desks in another classroom. If you wish to support this project for Gainesville’s sister city, the well-constructed wood desks are only $30. Please contact Doris Harvey if you would like to make a donation. Most children there sit on benches but desks can provide better learning and we hope to supply most children with desks.
The Racial Justice Committee would really like to have more ACTIVE members who can support racial education and equality at UCG and at events in Alachua County. Please alert Doris Harvey if you are interested in joining. We need you!
