Racial Justice Committee – September 2023

Racial Justice Committee (RJC) invites you to become a Justice League superhero! This fall we hope you’ll join RJC events to learn, grow, and contribute to local efforts for racial equity in our community.

  • Sept. 17 worship service: The play “A conversation between Frederick Douglass and John Brown” will invite us to listen to God still speaking through this imaginary meeting of two good friends who were both fighting to end slavery.

  • Sept. 17 seminar –  “Supporting Immigrant Rights” – Veronica Robleto, director and legal navigator of the Human Rights Coalition of Alachua County, will share how new anti-immigrant bills are impacting local people. Hear about HRC’s ID Drive, accompaniment program, and immigrant hotline. Learn how you can help by using your own community ID.

  • Sept. 24Human Rights Coalition of Alachua County will offer a community ID Drive at UCG, 11 a.m. to noon. You can sign up to get your ID. Reliable photo IDs, like this one, are necessary for many public services.

  • Sept. 30 – A Climate Summit will be held at UCG on this Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., cosponsored by the Creation Care and Climate (C3J) Task Force of UCG and Alachua NAACP Environmental Climate Justice Committee (ECJC). The Summit will feature keynote speaker Jacqueline Patterson, Director of the Chisholm Legacy Project. Results of the county’s climate vulnerability study will be discussed by Stephen Hofstetter (Alachua EPD Director) and John Nix (Chair of Citizen’s Climate Advisory Board). This will be followed by panels on water, food, energy, and health with local experts, moderated by local elected officials. Lunch is provided (chicken or tofu sandwiches from Germaine’s, a locally owned restaurant). Invite a community member to join you! Click here for our digital flyer to share! Admission is free. Pre-registration is required. Register here: https://bit.ly/CSRSVP23.

  • Oct. 8th – Banned Book Week reception in the UCG Library, 11 a.m. to noon. Get to know what children, youth, and adult books are banned from K-12 classrooms and school media centers in Florida and the U.S. Check out UCG’s collection of banned books and learn how you can advocate for intellectual freedom. Sign up to read a banned book and discuss it at a seminar in late October. Your donation to UCG will help RJC expand UCG’s banned book collection to include these titles.
