Racial Justice First Wednesday Movies

Join us for Racial Justice Committee’s First Wednesday Movie Nights each month from March – June, 2022

While many view movies merely as a form of escape, they also clarify and help us consider the world around us. It is our hope that the movies and documentaries we watch will each lead to a better understanding of the issues we face today.

Session 1: March – June 2022 (2nd Wednesday—6:30 to appx 10:00 pm)

March 2 –  I Am Not Your Negro (2016) [history] PG13–1hour 35 min. Biopic film based on James Baldwin’s unfinished memoir, Remember This House.

April 6  – Selma (2014) [Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., voting rights] PG13–2 hrs 8 min. Film documenting groundswell effort by Dr. King and others to fight for voting rights in Selma, Alabama. (Three marches from March 7-21, 1965)

May 4 – Do the Right Thing (1989) [racial tension, gentrification, police brutality] R–2 hrs. Spike Lee movie showcases a Brooklyn neighborhood in a simmering hot summer that is eerily reminiscent current events happening in recent times.

June 1 – Marshall (2017) [Thurgood Marshall, criminal justice] PG13-1 hr 58 min. A biopic legal drama film focusing on Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice that focuses on one of the first cases of his career, the State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell.
