“Music, I think, is best when it honestly explores personal demons, and it stirs around in the silt of the psyche to find out what’s really there.” – Tom Morello

WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS – Rev. Chad McGinnis

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT – Bill Zegel

CLIMATE CARE AND CREATION JUSTICE COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENT – Jim Harper and friends

PRELUDE – “Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon (title tweaked by Disturbed), offered by Angela Mickle, cello

OPENING – “Singing Everything,” by Joy Harjo, offered by Jess Archer

Once there were songs for everything.
Songs for planting, for growing, for harvesting,
For eating, getting drunk, falling asleep,
For sunrise, birth, mind-break, and war.
For death (those are the heaviest songs and they
Have to be pried from the earth with shovels of grief).
Now all we hear are falling-in-love songs and
Falling apart after falling in love songs.
The earth is leaning sideways
And a song is emerging from the floods
And fires. Urgent tendrils lift toward the sun.
You must be friends with silence to hear.
The songs of the guardians of silence are the most powerful –
They are the most rare.

SONG – “All This Joy, All This Sorrow”

All this joy, all this sorrow,
All this promise, all this pain,
Such is life, such is being,
Such is spirit, such is love.

Sing of joy, sing of sorrow,
Sing of promise, sing of pain,
Such is life, such is being,
Such is spirit, such is love.

World of joy, world of sorrow,
World of promise, world of pain,
Such is life, such is being,
Such is spirit, such is love.

All is joy, all is sorrow,
All is promise, all is pain,
Such is life, such is being
Such is spirit, such is love.

LYRICAL READING FROM SPECIAL MUSIC – Rev. Talia Raymond and Rev. Chad McGinnis

So close, no matter how far; Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are, And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words, I don’t just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you; Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
-from Nothing Else Matters, by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield

SPECIAL MUSIC – “Nothing Else Matters” offered by Ruth Saunders, violin, and Angela Micklecello

SERMON – “Gospel According to Metal” – Rev. Chad McGinnis

SONG AND OFFERTORY – “Turn, Turn, TurnChorus:

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
Chorus

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together
Chorus

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing
Chorus

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of peace, I swear it’s not too late

Chorus

Sunday Seminar – Dreams and Aspirations – The dreams and aspirations of a community play a crucial role in shaping that community’s future. At this seminar, we’ll take a look at the dreams and aspirations expressed by members of the United Church of Gainesville through our chalk talk earlier this year. By examining these dreams, we hope to gain an understanding of our values, priorities, and vision for the future. Bill Zegel, from the Capital Campaign Committee, will facilitate. Join us in person or via Zoom. Meeting ID: 829 6457 0385 Passcode: 1624.

Puzzlers are Back! Exchange puzzles that you’ve already done for new (to you) ones. We’ll be in front of Seminar B today from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. See you then!

Patticakes Potluck! – Patticakes is a group for UCG member and visitor families with small children, from infants through first grade, as well as their siblings. Join us today, 4-6 p.m. at Amanda and Michael Tudeen’s Treehouse.  Please bring a finger food appetizer, an easily shareable dish, or a beverage. We will have snacks and drinks for the kids. For more information or for directions email mtudeen@gmail.com.

Food4Kids is our outreach program that provides weekly bags of food for students at Rawlings Elementary. We have been feeding kids in the community for over 13 years, and last year we had 200 students to feed! In the past, we have received grants from the county, but these funds only cover about 45% of our total budget. Our funding has traditionally come entirely from the UCG congregation, and with rising food costs and more students in our program, we need you more than ever. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please contact Jess Archer. You can donate by check to UCG with Food4Kids in the subject line, or in ShelbyNext.

UCG YA (Young Adult) Lunch group starts today after the 10 a.m. worship service. Meet at the fountain at 11 a.m. All young adults are welcome to attend and enjoy free lunch with us at an eatery near the church. Future lunch dates are 9/10, 9/24, 10/29, and 11/5. You do not need to be a UCG member.

UCG Supper Club Friday, September 22, 7 p.m. – It features a chicken entree. We meet in groups of 8-10 in the homes of participants. Recipes are provided so that each group shares the same menu. Since we meet on Fridays in the fall to avoid football games, working people will be assigned easy or make-ahead recipes. Contact Anne Casella (annecasella@gmail.com, 352-256-5960) or Kimberly McCollough (kmcollough224@gmail.com, 352-378-8371) to RSVP. If you can host one of the groups, please let them know. The deadline to sign up is Sunday, September 3.

Our Boards and Committees Need You! It’s not too late to sign up for a board or committee on the bulletin board in the Courtyard today.

Single 10 a.m. Service Continues Through the Fall – A congregational decision on whether to continue with one service or return to two will take place at the October 15 congregational meeting.

August 25 COVID Update

In Alachua County, the COVID-19 virus continues to be detectable in nearly all wastewater samples. The high test positivity rate suggests that the virus is still spreading without control. Nationwide both new hospitalizations and deaths are increasing. The highly transmissible EG.5 (Eris) omicron sub-variant is likely responsible for these increases. With the continued spread of the virus, viral strains with additional mutations are appearing; this increases the probability of a person being reinfected and vaccines being less effective.

In the Sanctuary, masks are not required but are encouraged, especially for people at risk for serious illness from COVID-19.  The only masks that protect a person from getting infected are the N-95 and KN-95 (available in the foyer) masks.
