Everything that is in the heavens, on earth, and under the earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness. – Saint Hildegard of Bingen

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS – Rev. Talia Raymond

PRELUDE – “My True Home” – in honor of Thich Nhat Hanh, Mark Burlingame, handpan

CALL TO WORSHIP – excerpts from the writings of Saint Hildegard of Bingen

Leader: All of creation is a song of praise to God. Love abounds in all things, excels from the depths to beyond the stars, is lovingly disposed to all things. Good People, most royal greening verdancy, rooted in the sun, you shine with radiant light.

People: All living creatures are sparks from the radiation of God’s brilliance, emerging from God like the rays of the sun.

Leader: Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of the Earth’s greenings. Now, think.

People: There is the music of Heaven in all things. Part of the terror is to take back our own listening, to use our own voice, to see our own light.

Leader: Humanity, take a good look at yourself. Inside, you’ve got heaven and earth, and all of creation. You’re a world—everything is hidden in you.

OPENING SONG – “She Changes Everything”

TIME WITH CHILDREN – with Mark Burlingame

INTERLUDE AND OFFERTORY

SCRIPTURE – John 13:34 and 14:15-16 – Rev. Andy Bachmann

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another…

If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

And I will ask God, who will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.  This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees them nor knows them. You know them, because they abide with you, and they will be in you.

READING – from the Writings on the Holy Spirit written by St. Hildegard von Bingen in 1100.

I am the Supreme and Fiery Force who kindles every living spark…. As I circled the whirling sphere with my upper wings (that is, with Wisdom), rightly I ordained it. And I am the fiery life of the Divine essence: I flame above the beauty of the fields; I shine in the waters; I burn in the sun, the moon, and the stars. And, with the airy wind, I quicken all things vitally by an unseen, all-sustaining life. For the air is alive in the verdure and the flowers; the waters flow as if they lived; the sun too lives in its light; and when the moon wanes it is rekindled by the light of the sun, as if it lived anew. Even the stars glisten in their light as if alive.

SERMON – “Karitas” – Rev. Talia Raymond

CHANT – “Karitas habundat” – antiphon composed by St. Hildegard of Bingen. Sung by Hannah Norton

Karitas habundat in omnia, de imis excellentissima super sidera atque amantissima
in omnia, quia summo regi osculum pacis dedit.
Love abounds in all, from the depths exalted and excelling over every star,
and most beloved of all, for to the highest King the kiss of peace she gave.
