The United Church of Gainesville – January 31, 2021
“The Rising Tide”
“This might not be an easy time
There’s rivers to cross and hills to climb
Some days we might fall apart
And some nights might feel cold and dark
When nobody wins afraid of losing
And the hard roads are the ones worth choosing
Some day we’ll look back and smile
And know it was worth every mile”
-Starting Over, by Chris Stapleton.
This morning our worship service will premiere at 10am.
Please click here to begin.
Welcome- Rev. Andy Bachmann
Words of Invocation- “Go to the Limits of Your Longing” by Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Joanna Macy. Read by Rev. Talia Raymond
God speaks to each of us as God makes us,
Then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
“You, sent out beyond your recall,
Go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.
Flare up like a flame
And make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.
Nearby is a country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Take my hand.
Opening Song- “Be Now My Vision” (Please join in the singing!)
Be now my vision, O God of my heart;
Nothing surpasses the love you impart–
You my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, your presence my light.
Be now my wisdom and be my true word;
Ever within me, my soul is assured;
Mother and Father, you are both to me,
Now and forever your child I will be.
Riches I need not, nor life’s empty praise,
You, my inheritance, now and always;
You and you only are first in my heart,
Great God, my treasure, may we never part.
Sovereign of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, o Bright heaven’s sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.
Time with the Children – “How Full is Your Bucket?” – Offered by Andy Bachmann
United Tribes Virtch Church and Activity Time
Special Music- “Starting Over” by Chris Stapleton. Offered by Ned Stewart.
Time for Sharing and The Book of Genesis by Kei Miller. Read and offered by Rev. Bromleigh McCleneghan
Suppose there was a book full of only the word,
“Let” from whose clipped sound all things begin-fir
and firmament, feather, the first whale– and suppose
we could scroll through its pages every day to find and pronounce
A Let meant only for us– we would stumble through the streets with open books,
Eyes crossed from too much reading; we would speak
in auto-rhyme, the world would echo itself– and still
we’d continue in rounds, saying Let and Let and Let
Until even silent dreams had been allowed.
Scripture – An interpretation of Genesis 1:1-3, by J. Phillip Newell
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Before that, there was only empty darkness and the deep eternal waters.
But in the dark, a wind began to stir. It was the breath of life. It was God saying, ‘Let there be light.”
And there was light.
God saw that it was good.
There was a time for light and a time for darkness. The light was called day and the darkness night. And there was evening and morning, creation’s first day.

Please help us feed kids experiencing food insecurity – Food 4 Kids Fundraiser – Donations are running behind as we continue our 2021 F4Ks fundraiser. Please help us reach our goal so we can have an 11th year of providing meals for kids with food insecurity. The UCG team is sending home 160 bags weekly for the Rawlings children and that number continues to grow. It costs $9.91 to feed a child each week. $200 will feed a child for the rest of this year, but of course, whatever you can give will help to make a difference in the life of a child. All of your donation will be used to feed the children. Please send your donation to UCG and note F4Ks on your check or click here and scroll through the drop down fund menu to donate now. If you need more information, contact Reisa George. Thank you for all that you have always done.
