SOUNDING THE CHIME

PRELUDE – Phillip Herr-Klepacki

CALL TO WORSHIP – Matthew 5: 15-16, from The Message by Eugene Peterson

We’re here to be light, bringing out the holy colors in the world.
We need to be like a city on a hill.
If we are light-bearers, then we can’t go around hiding under buckets, can we?
We need to be shining, shining on a light stand,
being generous with our light and with our lives.

OPENING SONG – “This Little Light of Mine” – Andy Bachmann, guitar; Larry Reimer, Flugelhorn; Phillip Herr-Klepacki, piano; Ellen Ribe, bass

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. (sing 3 times)
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Everywhere I go, I’m gonna let it shine (3x)
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

All through the night, I’m gonna let it shine (3x)
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
(slower)   Let it shine …. Let it shine …  let it shine.

RESPONSIVE READING – “When I am Among the Trees” by Mary Oliver
Congregation, please read the text that is printed in bold.

When I am among the trees, especially the willow and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness,
I would almost say that they save me and daily.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves and call out,
“Stay awhile.”

The light flows from their branches, and they call again,
“It’s simple.   And you have come into the world to do this:
to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.”

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN – “After the Fall” -Rev. Larry Reimer
BIRTHDAYS

INTERLUDE

RECEIVING OUR OFFERING – Please include the question card you received coming into worship.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – Rev. Andy Bachmann

“Bridge Over Troubled Water” (Paul Simon) – offered by Rev. Andy Bachmann

When you’re weary feeling small, when tears are in your eyes
I’ll dry them all, I’m on your side.
Oh, when times get rough and friends just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down
When you’re down and out, when you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard, I will comfort you; I’ll take your part.
Oh, when darkness comes and pain is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.

Congregation, please join in on the last verse:

Sail on silver girl. Sail on by. Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way. See how they shine.
Oh, if you need a friend, I’m sailing right behind,
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will ease your mind,

SERMON – “Broken, Unlikely, Human:  Heroes” – Rev. Sandy Reimer

Readers: Jackie Davis, Karol Halter, Kimberly McCollough
Reader: Tony Miller

PRAYER “Pie Jesu” (from The Requiem Mass, G. Faure) – offered by Phillip Herr-Klepacki and Cindy Martin

BENEDICTION
May your light shine in a world in need of light.
May you find courage, within your breath, when the way is hard and the
path, not always clear.
May you be enfolded in grace and in hope, for deep down there is another truth:
you are not alone.  Amen!   Blessed be!

Choral Response: “The Peace of the Earth”
Phillip will play the song once; then we will sing it together twice.

The peace of the earth be with you, the peace of the heavens too.
The peace of the rivers be with you, the peace of the oceans too.
Deep peace, falling over you.  God’s peace, growing in you.

March 19 COVID-19 Update

The State of Florida and Alachua County have stopped posting COVID-19 new case data. However, the Brown School of Public Health reported 37 new cases per 100,000 per week for Florida. Therefore, Alachua County likely remains in the orange zone, a significant risk of viral transmission.
