Call to Worship

Leader:  When the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place and all of the many foreigners heard the witnesses speaking in their own tongue.
People: Come, Holy Spirit, witness to us also in our several languages
Leader:  Speak in the language of our need. Let us hear how our deepest hungers, desires and aspirations can be fulfilled by your goodness and in your service.
People: Come, Holy Spirit, give us that good news again.
Leader:  Speak in the language of our fear. Let us hear how our worries about the future, and about each other, and about ourselves, can find rest in your care.
People: Come, Holy Spirit, give us that encouraging news again.
Leader:  Speak in the language of our gratitude. Let us hear how our honest thanks relate us, not only to those with whom we live, but also to you, Giver of Life.
People: Come, Holy Spirit, give us that enlarging news again.
Leader:  Speak to us in the language of hope. Let us hear how our yearning and our expectations are not just wishful thinking, but responses to your promise.
People: Come, Holy Spirit, give us that good news again.

Opening Song- “O, For A Thousand Tongues to Sing”

O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories ever echoing the triumphs of God’s grace.

He speaks, and listening to his voice, new life the dead receive.
Our mournful, broken hearts rejoice, our burdens now relieved.

In Christ our friend we then shall know: forgive and be forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below, and own that love is heaven.

Prayers of the People- Rev. Andy Bachmann

Special music from the Jazz Bandits, “If I Can Dream,” written by Walter Earl Brown

A Reading –  “Harlem,” by Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Scripture – Acts 2: 1-18

Sermon- “Summer in the City” – Rev. Bromleigh McCleneghan

Final song- “The Rainbow Connection,” by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, Led by Andy Bachmann and Amanda Garrigues-Demouey

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide

So we’ve been told, and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong, wait and see
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it
Look what it’s done so far

What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

All of us under its spell
We know that it’s probably magic
Have you been half asleep, and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same

I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
It’s something that I’m supposed to be

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me
La-da-da-de-da-da-do
La-da-da-da-da-de-da-do

Benediction and Alleluia

Postlude – “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” offered by the Jazz Bandits, written by Joe Zawinul, lyrics by The Buckinghams

Sunday Seminar

Please note: the seminar will begin at 10:30am this Sunday.

Sunday Seminar at 10:30am –  “Emerging from Introvert Heaven,” coordinated by Connie Caldwell– Introverts can experience exhaustion from too much time with other people, and need to be alone in order to recharge.  Some of us actually enjoyed (not without a bit of guilt) the time of isolation.  Now that we’re vaccinated and are freer to mingle, introverts may have mixed feelings.  What’s been your experience of the year of COVID? (This is for introverts and for those who would like to understand them.)
