“Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” – John Milton

WELCOME — Hannah Norton

PRELUDE — Phillip Herr-Klepacki

A TIME FOR CELEBRATION — Members of the 2023 Enlistment Team

CALL TO WORSHIP — “Honorable Harvest” from Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer — offered by Renee Andrews

One: Know the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you may take care of them.

Many: Introduce yourself.

One: Be accountable as the one who comes asking for life.

Many: Ask permission before taking. Abide by the answer.

One: Never take the first. Never take the last. Take only what you need.

Many: Take only that which is given.

One: Never take more than half. Leave some for others. Use it respectfully. Never waste what you have taken.

Many: Share. Give thanks for what you have been given.

One: Give a gift, in reciprocity for what you have taken.

All: Sustain the ones who sustain you and the earth will last forever.

HYMN — “Come, O Thankful People Come” # 422 in UCC Hymnal

TIME WITH CHILDREN — “The Message of the Birds” by Kate Westerlund and Feridun Oral – offered by Jean Cunningham

INTERLUDE – Phillip Herr-Klepacki

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE — Rev. Chad McGinnis

READING — “Nest” by Jeffrey Harrison — offered by Eric Lemstrom

It wasn’t until we got the Christmas tree
into the house and up on the stand
that our daughter discovered a small bird’s nest
tucked among its needled branches.

Amazing, that the nest had made it
all the way from Nova Scotia on a truck
mashed together with hundreds of other trees
without being dislodged or crushed.

And now it made the tree feel wilder,
a balsam fir growing in our living room,
as though at any moment a bird might flutter
through the house and return to the nest.

And yet, because we’d brought the tree indoors,
we’d turned the nest into the first ornament.
So we wound the tree with strings of lights,
draped it with strands of red beads,

and added the other ornaments, then dropped
two small brass bells into the nest, like eggs
containing music, and hung a painted goldfinch
from the branch above, as if to keep them warm.

CLOSING HYMN — “Turn, Turn, Turn” #81 in the UCG Songbook

Chorus:
To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

Chorus

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

Chorus

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from
embracing

Chorus

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of peace, I swear it’s not too late
Chorus

Sunday Seminar — The Theology of Lessons and Carols — The language of Christmas carols is always a source for conversation and questions: What is a Noel? Why does Satan creep into all these sweet songs about a baby? Rev. Talia Raymond will lead a discussion about some of our 2023 Lessons and Carols texts. Join us to learn some history, and some context, and get a sneak peek at some of our musical pieces for this year’s beloved service. Join us in Reimer Hall or on Zoom at 11:30 a.m. Passcode: 1624

“Grace in Action” — We have received pledges totaling 68% of our goal. With just a week more to go before our enlistment team starts making phone calls, this is a wonderful moment to submit your pledge for next year. Thank you to all who have already responded. There are three ways to pledge:

1. go online here or

2. send an email to the UCG accountant at catherinec@ucgainesville.org or

3. fill out a pledge card, available in the church office and foyer, and return in person or by mail.

Amid our seasonal busyness, join us for a time for silence, scripture, and readings, and time in small groups to reflect, listen, and pray for one another. We will meet on Tuesdays, December 5, 12, and 19 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Participants are asked to commit to at least two of the three sessions. If you did not register earlier this fall, just email Sandy Reimer at reimer.sandy@gmail.comDeadline is November 28.
