CALL TO WORSHIP- From 1 Corinthians 12- Members of the Search Committee

Our Search Committee is Andy Bachmann, Dawn Beachy, Barbara Beynon, Christine Denny, Alan Hill, Karen Johnson, Joanne LaFramenta, Hannah Norton, Andrew Ragsdale, Talia Raymond, Marianne Schmink, Taylor Stein, Lindsey Telg, and Taylor Williams

Dawn: From 1 Corinthians, chapter 12. Now, there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same God; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in everyone.

Alan: To each of us is given manifestations of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the spirit the utterance of wisdom,

Karen: and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same spirit,

Joanne: To another faith by the same spirit, and to another gifts of healing.

Hannah: To others is given the gifts of the working of miracles, and of prophecy,

Andrew: and to another the ability to distinguish between spirits.

Marianne: all these are inspired by one and the same Spirit who apportions to each one individually.

Taylor: for as the body is one and has many members, so all of us, though many, are one.

Lindsey: If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.

Taylor: Let us now, as one body, rejoice together!

All: We celebrate together as one body, with joy!

TWO RENDERINGS OF ROMANS 8

From the New Revised Standard Version offered by Daniel Webster

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? …Who is to condemn? … Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

From enfleshed offered by Fiona and Calliope Hammond

For I am convinced, that neither death, nor life,
Neither the things that bring us pleasure, nor the things that seek to make us feel ashamed,
Neither threats from the state, nor any structure of dominance,
Neither the legacies of harm freshly unfolding, nor any that are still to come,
Neither the days when life feels unlivable, nor the days when loving ourselves comes easy,
Neither doctrines of hate, nor religious proclamations that condemn,
Neither respectability politics, nor bigots nor bullies,
Neither fatigue, nor passion, neither regrets nor having zero $%^& left to give,
Neither the struggles we cannot yet name, nor the ones that always seem to stay the same,
Nor anything else in all of creation,
Will be able to separate us from Love.

SERMON – Beloved” – Rev. Dr. Cynthia Lindner

CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

We, the people of the United Church of Gainesville,
Welcome you, Bromleigh McCleneghan, as our pastor and teacher,
And we promise to walk with you and support you,
To work with you and to pray with you,
In a mutual ministry of care and support.

We join with you in this ministry as a spiritual community:
To worship God, however known,
To welcome into our church those of differing understanding
and theological opinion,

To learn from our religious heritage,
Yet to grow by seeking new dimensions of truth,

To follow, even imperfectly, the way of Jesus
In personal involvement with each other,
And, strengthened by this bond,
To act in Christian concern for the welfare of all people.

September 9 COVID Update – According to the CDC, Alachua County residents have a high risk of serious illness from COVID-19 (the Orange Zone). The only sign of improvement was a drop in the number of new hospital admissions with COVID. Masks continue to be required upon entering the sanctuary and are recommended when visiting crowded indoor venues.
