Pride Sunday
Sunday, September 29, 2024 – 10 a.m.
Our livestream begins here at 10 a.m.
“Hope will never be silent.” – Harvey Milk
WELCOME – Rev. Talia Raymond
ANNOUNCEMENT – UCC Climate Voter Hope – Jim Harper, Creation Justice Committee
PRELUDE – offered by Phillip Herr-Klepacki, Director of Music Ministry
CALL TO WORSHIP – adapted from “enfleshed” – members of the Open and Affirming Committee
One: God is calling us
Out of the places we hide
Out of insecurity
Out of shame
Out from under that which silences love and justice
ALL: Come out, people of God!
One: Though we may be afraid
Though we will be at risk
Though the cross stands as a threat
ALL: God calls us to courage!
One: Our God is a god of resurrection
Of new life after devastation
Of hope in the grip of evil
And so we dare to proclaim, with pride and faith, our truths:
ALL: We believe in the power of love
One: We believe in solidarity with the suffering
ALL: We believe we are each valuable
One: We believe that our togetherness is transformative
The world is longing for Holy truths that reveal,
Voices that speak real words of hope
ALL: Come out, people of God!
OPENING SONG – “One Ohana” (One Great Family)
Here in the garden of creation,
Here is the home of life and love,
Circled ‘round by endless blessings,
Earth below and sky above.
Chorus: All of creation, one ohana,
All of creation sings in you;
Many the voices, one great music,
Part of me and part of you.
We are a part of all creation,
There is a mystery all around.
All the creatures, all that grows here,
Light and darkness, every sound.
Chorus
Hiding within the seed in winter,
Rising anew in every spring,
Dancing through the hill and forests,
God is alive in everything.
Chorus
If you would know and love your Maker,
If you would learn the Sacred Way,
Treasure every plant and creature,
Treasure each other every day.
Chorus
TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BIRTHDAYS – Julián Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love
INTERLUDE
READING – from Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe
“Some people are born in the mountains, while others are born by the sea. Some people are happy to live in the place they were born, while others must make a journey to reach the climate in which they can flourish and grow. Between the ocean and the mountains is a wild forest. That is where I want to make my home.”
RESPONSE – “The Rose”
Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor that leaves the heart to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need;
I say love, it is a flower; and you, its only seed.
It’s the heart, afraid of breaking that never learns to dance.
It’s the dream, afraid of waking that never takes the chance.
It’s the one who won’t be taken who cannot seem to give;
And the soul, afraid of dying that never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember, in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love, in the spring, becomes the Rose.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – Rev. Bromleigh McCleneghan
MEDITATIVE MUSIC – offered by Nan Ryan, handpan
READING FROM SCRIPTURE – Selections from Genesis 1 and 2
SERMON – “This is We” – Rev. Talia Raymond
SPECIAL MUSIC AND OFFERING – “This is Me” by Pasek and Paul, arranged by Mac Huff – offered by the UCG Choir, Jasmine Angelini-Knoll and Arwynn Collins, soloists

All: Encouraged and challenged, we endeavor to live in harmony and demand justice.

If you think you have an item in the Sound Room, feel free to stop by and take a look, and take your property home.
Looking Ahead
If you are considering United Church of Gainesville (UCG) membership, the next UCG 101 is Tuesday, October 1, 5:30 p.m. in Reimer Hall. This is a time to learn about the church and connect with other members over light refreshments. Please contact the office to RSVP or sign up on the bulletin board by the office on Sundays. Please let us know if you need childcare. The next Visitor’s Coffee is after the October 13 service. We will hold a welcome and reception for new members during and after service on New Member Sunday, October 20.
The next Kids’ Night Out is Friday October 11 from 5:30-9 p.m. at United Church of Gainesville. Infants through 5th Grade are invited for a night of “Things that go Bump in the Night” with activities, crafts and food. Cost is $20 for the first child, and $15 for each additional child. Men’s retreat is open to all in the wider UCG community who identify as men, including members, friends, and guests. Please contact Jeremy Archer at bdjarcher@gmail.com with any questions, or if you have never tried this event and would like to hear more about what it is like. You can register through the small group signup, by emailing Jeremy, or by signing up in the courtyard during Sundays from late September through mid-October. Schedule and more information available at bit.ly/UCGMensRetreat24. We hope to see you there! Scholarships are available, so please do not let cost be a barrier if you would like to attend. (Donations to the scholarship fund are gladly accepted.)
Calling All Artists! We want you to exhibit your creations at our annual United Church of Gainesville Art Show on Sunday, November 10. You can sell your work, show it, or both. We call it “Show & Tell . . . and Sell” and welcome all ages, all kinds of creativity, and all skill levels! Spaces are limited – the deadline for application is Friday, October 25. Applications are available online at bit.ly/artsapp24 or in the church office.
Capital Campaign Feasibility Study Update: One of the important findings of this spring’s Capital Campaign Feasibility Study was that congregants needed to learn more about the projects on the “Essential Repairs and Improvements” list, what they entailed, why they were necessary, and so on. As part of the effort to address this need, the UCG Capital Campaign Visioning Committee and the Buildings and Grounds Committee are assembling a series of short videos to describe projects on the “Essential Repairs and Improvements” list. Three new videos have been added:
in addition to the first five videos about water supply, the beam that separates Reimer Hall from the west wing, west bathrooms and HVAC. The videos will be available on this YouTube playlist. Please send any questions or comments about the projects, and about the effectiveness of these videos, to either Tim Martin or Erick Smith.
UCG Emergency Volunteer Phone Tree – If you are not already on the call recipient list of the UCG Emergency Volunteer Phone Tree and you would like a call from the UCG Phone Tree about any hurricane warnings issued for the Gainesville area, please contact the front office to add your name to the list.
