Sunday Seminars – February 2025

The UCG Sunday Seminar Committee is proud to announce a line-up of seminars we are certain you will enjoy. Seminars are in-person and on Zoom on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Meeting ID: 829 6457 0385 Passcode: 1624

February 2 – “LGBTQ+ Inclusivity 101: Developing an Inclusive Vocabulary and Knowledge of Queer Gender and Sexual Identities” with special guest Ceci Luna. This workshop focuses on relevant issues to the LGBTQ+ Community. We identify common language and learn how different people’s experiences play out in the world. Through conversations and activities, we explore systems of power and privilege and learn how we can create more inclusive and equitable spaces.

February 9 –  No seminar due to the Winter Congregational Meeting.

February 16 – “Alchemy: The Healing Power of Art,” with local filmmaker, Bridget Fitzpatrick. We will watch Bridget’s short film “Alchemy”, then Bridget will speak about her experience as a filmmaker. Alchemy tells the story of glassblower and social entrepreneur, Rebeccah Byer, as she navigates her grief at the loss of her brother from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, to create a glass studio for youth. The Olio is a place of healing and growth for Rebeccah and her apprentices. In Alchemy, we witness this transformative power through one of Rebeccah’s apprentices, Lucy McGinnis, who struggles with being a young trans woman in North Carolina.

February 23“Bridging the Gap Between Deaf and Hearing Worlds,” with special guest Kentrell Martin, author of Shelby’s Adventures. Growing up with a deaf brother, Kentrell witnessed how the world viewed people who are deaf.  Kendrell will share his story and how it led to him authoring his book series, Shelby’s Adventures, to introduce kids and parents to American Sign Language and deaf culture.  Kentrell invites you to learn how to help bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing world. Kendrell showed his energy and passion for teaching children sign language during Camp UCG last summer and we are excited to invite the adults in our UCG community to learn from him as well.
